5 out of 5 stars Works Great!!   January 14, 2005
I purchased one of these about 3 months ago and have experienced none of the problems such as clock resetting as mentioned by some of the other reviewers.RCA may have improved the design (Mine is a 810B) or possibly the reviewer was using standard batteries instead of alkalines.br /I really love the macro functions. Since I have a home theater system it was always a pain turning everything on and off one at a time. Now I just hit one button. I also programmed a macro to switch the tv and satellite receiver to high definition mode and back. This was great for my wife who always had some difficulty in accomplishing this.br /The only fault I have found is the learning function in a couple of instances required two or three tries before it worked but it did learn most commands on the first try.br /I think this is a great buy for the money.

2 out of 5 stars Very disappointed with this   January 1, 2004
I liked the layout of this remote, and with the learning capabilities, I figured that this would be ideal. However, I couldn't get it to learn a single command. It kept showing the ERROR sign. When I programmed my CD player with the only code that would work, only one function of that worked...and that was the wrong key! Needless to say, it got returned.

4 out of 5 stars Suits my needs, but needs improvement   June 13, 2003

I have an large home theater setup, and I hate the idea of sorting through 6 different remotes to preform a single function. The RCA RCU810 really did combine all of my remotes into one. There was not a single function it couldn't handle. pDespite what other reviews have indicated, this remote CAN handle another components functions while in a different mode. For example, I set the remote's volume up/down keys to control the receiver's volume no matter what mode it's in. So even if I'm in TV or DVD mode, pressing the volume button will always control the volume on the receiver. This keeps the button-pressing to a minimum. pThis remote is not without its flaws, however. As others have stated, the backlight is a nice feature, but the button to turn it on is hard to find in the dark. Plus, it makes a slight humming noise when its on. Another annoyance is that the DVD/VCR controls; ffwd, pause, stop, etc. are placed at the very bottom of the remote. This makes it very awkward to press these buttons, especially with one hand. pAnother problem which seems to be a common among everyone is the clock resetting. This is a very common occurance on mine. I've given up on setting the clock because it resets itself at least 1-2 times a week. Thankfully, you don't lose any of your programmed functions when this happens. If it did, I would've returned it right away. I think the problem is directly related to the use of the backlight function. Poor circuitry perhaps?pFinally, some more macro buttons would have been nice. I can think of a million uses for this feature if there were more. This remote only give you 3, which isn't enough. pOverall though, I'm satified with this product. It does what it says, and all my other remotes are now in a cabinet.

2 out of 5 stars Works, with quirks   November 27, 2002

The downers:br1) Backlight button is hard to find in the dark and doesn't stay lit long enough to find the obscure button you are looking forbr2) VCR buttons are way down at the bottom. With TiVo this is awkward since they are the most frequently used buttons and gives me a bit of a thumb cramp.br3) Only preprogrammed for the Phillips TiVo, not the Sony versionbr4) Learning capability is limited to about 20 buttons, which may seem like a lot, but not enough if the codebook is missing one of your remotes.br5) The bug: When backlight is on, sometimes the remote forgets what time it is (resets to 12:00), switches to TV mode and turns off the backlight. I gave up on using backlight mode.br6) (2 year update) The most frequently used buttons require intense pressure to activate. As a TiVo user, This means FF/Play are almost useless. As of this update, I'm in the market for a new remote, and I've lowered my rating.pThe uppers:br1) Comfortable to hold, nice form factor and weight.br2) Good battery life. I've had it for a year and never replaced the batteries.br3) Primary buttons (volume, channel, arrows, select) are easy to identify by their finger-feelbr4) Nearly all functional keys are capable of learning (The clear key can't learn... it cancels the learning function)br5) Taking out the batteries does not erase the programmed functions (For those of you paying attention, I put back the same batteries I took out).br6) (2.5 year update) Has a JP-1 interface (requires solder).

2 out of 5 stars Very unstable   October 13, 2002

The first one I bought four days ago kept resetting itself to 12:00 (like another customer reported) and goes into TV mode whenever it likes (just like the other customer said). I took it back and got a new one which started to do the very same thing after less than a day. I am taking it back and getting a different brand. I have wasted three days already. This is a [poo] remote control. I am warning you. Don't waste your time with this product!
