Of the CD players I have purchased recently, this one has been quite adequate. I actually purchased it for my son who uses it on car trips, etc. As he also uses it for a rehearsal tool, good reliable audio is important and this player brings those features to an acceptable pricepoint. No fancy multi-codec, stuff here, just virtually skip free, good-sounding performance. As with most of these players, I recommend upgrading the headphones ASAP, but the ones that came with this unit were OK. While I was pleased with the quality of this unit, I must say that, for similar reasons, I bought another of my children a CD player from target that I was equally pleased with but don't see on the website. Specifically, it was an Audiovox with 60-sec anti skip and a remote and it rang in cheaper than this Phillips.
